Turning 50 is a strange kind of milestone. For most of my life, fifty felt like a destination reserved for other people—the grown-ups, the elders, the ones who had it all figured out. And now, here it is, arriving right on my doorstep.
If you had asked me a few years ago what celebrating my 50th birthday would look like, I probably would have pictured a loud room, a crowd of people, laughter echoing off the walls, and a big, celebratory toast to the decades behind me.
When you get older, birthdays look different but life has a way of shifting your perspective, doesn’t it? When you’ve walked through seasons that tested your foundation—when you’ve known the heavy, quiet ache of losing a mother, and you’ve spent the winter midnights staring at the ceiling waiting for the sun—milestones hit a little differently. They aren’t just about counting years anymore; they are about measuring resilience.
So, this deeply personal reflection is going to publish and I’m going to step out into the world right on my actual birthday? In a way, yes. And maybe that is exactly as it should be. Turning 50 isn’t about putting on a performance or pretending that everything is neatly tied up with a bow. For me, entering this new decade is about honoring where I’ve actually been. It’s about acknowledging the strength it took to get through the dark hours, the quiet grace of everyday survival, and the profound capacity of a heart that still loves deeply, even when it’s hurting.
This year my candle will be symbolic…. like lighting a candle in the dark. As I greet the world on my birthday, I don’t want it to feel heavy. I want it to feel honest. Reaching fifty means I have half a century of memories tucked into my soul. It means I carry the echoes of the people who shaped me, the lessons learned from the things that broke open, and the quiet realization that peace doesn’t come from a loud party—it comes from learning to accept yourself exactly as you are. So here is to fifty. Here is to the years behind me, the quiet strength it took to keep going, and the grace to step into a new decade with an open, honest heart.
In my next 50, I am choosing to be intentional—and I’m starting today. No waiting for the “right time” or going through the motions. I am celebrating this milestone right here with the people who love me the most, in a way that truly honors us, our stories, and the unbreakable bonds we share. Here’s to living out loud, on purpose.
